ULISSES Team Project 2023 Winners

The event was attended by Professor Luís Castro, Vice-Rector of the ULisboa, who presented and discussed the projects of the six participating teams: "Calypso", "Charybdis", "Circe", "Cyclop", "Scylla" and "Sirenes". At the closing of the session the winning team was presented by Professor Luís Tinoca.

The award-winning project of the ULISSES 2023 project was "Oceans Without Plastic", designed and presented by the Cyclop team, consisting of Claudia Tamara Koy and Luzie Krings (Technical University of Darmstad), Eneko Sanaz Aramburu and Iñaki Salas Farrera (Polytechnic University of Catalonia), Margarida Paias Gouveia (University of Lisbon) and Michael Gilbert-Cabaceira (University of Washington).

The winning team presented a method for profiling the concentrations of microplastics and nanoplastics in the ocean, as well as their environmental impact, and proposed innovative approaches for reusing the collected plastics and for developing environmentally friendly and biodegradable fishing materials in order to tackle 'ghost fishing'.

ULISSES (ULisboa Interdisciplinary Studies on Sustainable Environment and Seas) is an international educational project that aims to offer students an active learning experience, as well as the development of skills associated with the protection of the oceans.

ULisboa is already working on the 4th edition of the project, whose applications are expected to take place between December 2023 and January 2024.
