Medicine
To train doctors so that they acquire solid scientific training, practical skills and professional attitude through a teaching programme with the following objectives:
To provide education and training in Biosciences that are key to understanding the mechanisms of life and its evolution;
To foster learning the scientific foundations and development of skills in doctor-patient communication, and in the perception of the personal, family and social dimension of the disease and its implications;
Integration of fundamental knowledge to solve clinical problems and reinforce the scientific aspect of Clinical Medicine;
Acquisition of clinical skills and training in their practice;
Understanding the fundamentals of contemporary medicine;
Development of self-learning and individual accountability;
Knowledge of the fundamentals of Bioethics and Ethics in Medicine.
These objectives are enhanced by FMUL’s participation in the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre, within the framework of an integrated organization model of teaching, research and health service provision.
Medical training allows taking on various career opportunities, such as Clinical Medicine (Hospital, General and Family Medicine), Public Health, Forensic Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Research and Teaching.
The Medical Profession is characterised by a sequence of degrees, which correspond to levels of technical and scientific differentiation with increasing responsibilities, obtained after periods of training and internships with public evidence of competence.
