Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution
The University of Lisbon (UL) and the University of Porto (UP) will hold a joint Doctoral Program in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (BIODIV), in the area of Biological Sciences. The program is provided by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) and Porto (FCUP), in collaboration with the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (CE3C / FCUL), the Center for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO / UP), the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC) and the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP). These units carry out research of international excellence in Biodiversity, Functional Ecology, phylogenetics, evolution, behavior, theoretical biology, developmental biology and bioinformatics, among other areas, and have research laboratories with equipment edge, plus a field station affects the CE3C.
BIODIV aims a post-graduate education leading to the award of a PhD degree in PhD specialties referred to in the respective study plan (for more information see http://ce3c.ciencias.ulisboa.pt).
The program has courses component of a year, with laboratory rotations, advanced courses and seminars and modular courses and a research component, with three-year, leading to the development of the thesis. Students can take advantage of the resources of the University of Lisbon and Porto at any stage of the doctoral program, although each student is registered in one of the two universities.
In particular, the human resources trained in BIODIV can be easily integrated into the smart specialization strategies defined for regions or nationwide. On the other hand, these human resources will certainly play an important role in the dissemination of scientific culture and the promotion of cultural activities through their interaction with institutions dealing with these subjects (eg Natural History Museum and Science, Foundations, NGOs and other associations).
