Civil Engineering
The aim of a PhD programme is to provide and create specialized knowledge in emerging scientific, technical and or technological areas. Its purpose is to provide the qualification necessary to carry out scientific research and independent technological development activities, of internationally renowned quality, in higher education institutions, research laboratories and specialized services of the public administration and of the business sector.
A PhD is usually associated with professional careers in higher education institutions and in research laboratories. These are the options that still motivate most doctoral students. However, it should be recognised that it was advanced training that potentiated the professional competitiveness of the doctorate holders who chose different branches of activity, namely in companies. The strengthening of the rates of integration of doctorate holders in higher education institutions, research laboratories and departments of public administration and companies remains one of the main objectives of the development policies.
Access and ingress
Graduates (5-yr program in Civil Eng. or alike) may apply for a MSC degree, as may those who hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is relevant to carry out the cycle of studies.
The interpretation given to the related areas is intentionally broad in scope in order to promote the development of crosscutting skills. To enhance these applications, it is strongly recommended that the academic part of the program be used, by exploring the flexibility allowed by the regulations regarding the number of credits and the nature of the course units.
