Population Sciences
The main goal of this proposal is to fill the gap existing in Portugal in 3rd cycle training in Population Sciences and thuspromote the development of skills and knowledge needed in positions, both public and private, that require advancedtraining in this area. Whereas the study of population is carried out, in a dispersed way, in various universities andcourses, there is no integrated training on Population Sciences in any national syllabus. This inter and transdisciplinaryprogramme combines the analytical perspective of Demography with that of other Population Sciences. Being a 3rdstudy cycle, it fundamentally aims at promoting highly specialised training and research in this area. It fits in with thegrowing importance of the demographic issues that challenge public policies and the economic and social fabric, suchas the ageing of the population in the most developed countries, demographic pressure in developing countries and international migrations.
The knowledge and skills you will acquire are valued by a range of institutions, from Academia to Statistical Offices, from Non-Governmental Organizations to local government (for planning purposes in health, education or housing, for example) or from international organizations (UNFPA, OECD, for example) to private companies.
In the first three years of operation, the Doutoramento Degree in Population Sciences will be taught at ISCSP, which will also assume the leadership of the Scientific Committee. This will rotate among the four institutions in three-year cycles.
