Civil Engineering
Skills to be acquired as a consequence of training in basic sciences:
• understanding of mathematical models of engineering problems using statistical elements, linear algebra,
differential and integral calculus, or linear differential equations;
• in Physics, knowledge in mechanics and thermodynamics;
• in Chemistry, the foundations for knowledge of materials;
• basic Geology training.
Skills to be acquired as a consequence of training in Civil Engineering sciences:
• ability to apply concepts of structural mechanics (strength of materials and structural analysis), fluid mechanics
(hydraulics) and soil / rock mechanics;
• understanding of the urban phenomena and the process of town planning;
• understanding of operational research methods in formulating decision problems;
• ability to perform a topographical survey and the use of computer aided drawing;
• understanding the behavior of building materials and the physics of buildings.
Civil Engineering has as its main purpose the design and operation of systems that, guaranteeing the exploitation of natural resources, allow its appropriate use by the population, with special emphasis on improving the quality of life. In this sense, the curricular structure of the Undergraduate Degree in Civil Engineering of IST follows the practice of the reference Science and Technology Universities worldwide. This first cycle of studies aims to provide students with a solid background in Basic Sciences, common to all IST engineering courses (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computing and Programming and Management) and in specific sciences for Civil Engineering. The extended competences in this study cycle facilitates the mobility of graduates between Universities, giving them the necessary capacity to attend a master's degree in Civil Engineering, including that offered by IST, or in related areas.
