Language Sciences
The Language Sciences first cycle study programme mainly aims to provide the acquisition of basic knowledge in fundamental scientific areas for pre-specialised training in Linguistics. This Programme focuses primarily on the description of the Portuguese language and how it is used both as a means of communication and as a way of perceiving the surrounding cultural and social reality, using appropriate linguistic analysis tools. Therefore, students learn structural concepts, methods and techniques of linguistic analysis that they should be able to apply in specific situations and use in solving linguistic issues. At the end of the study programme, students are prepared to further develop and specialise their skills in graduate courses, namely in the MA in Linguistics offered by FL.
Language Science graduates are qualified to work both in research and teaching in the various areas of Linguistics.
They develop activities in areas such as text editing, language consultancy, law (forensic linguistics), cognitive science, translation and health.
Many graduates in Language Sciences continue to study by entering master's and doctoral courses in the area of Language Sciences, among other areas of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
