Languages, Literatures and Cultures
This study cycle offers an interdisciplinary education within the Humanities that grants a solid multilingual and multicultural preparation. While centered upon the study of the most widely spoken European languages, their cultures and literatures, it allows for the combination of such focus with a supplementary education in other languages and cultures scattered through the globe. Following a general education in history, literature and contemporary culture, the alternative programmes offered within this degree course tend to privilege either the study of foreign languages and the contexts in which they are used, or a combination of foreign language(s) and Portuguese, so as to improve students’ oral and written competence in this language. This degree articulates with specialized post-graduate education, vocational or not, in particular that which requires the expert knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
The degree in Languages, Literatures and Cultures promotes skills that respond very flexibly to the job market, especially in multilingual and multicultural environments. Graduates work in areas such as translation, interpretation, international relations, cultural industries, tourism industries or teaching foreign languages.
Many graduates in Languages, Literatures and Cultures continue to study, attending Master's and Doctoral courses in literatures, cultures and foreign languages, ancient and modern.
