Goals

Deepen knowledge and skills in epidemiology, biostatistics and clinical research methodology, as well as promote research of excellence in Epidemiology and related areas.

Provide students with critical skills and competences related to the design and conduction of clinical and epidemiological research;

Train students to build robust, efficient and effective methodological proposals, with regard to sampling, construction of measurement instruments and data collection processes;

Encourage autonomy and competence in data analysis techniques;

Provide students with conceptual and analytical skills that allow them to formulate research questions, project proposals and analysis in the various clinical and epidemiological contexts and areas, as well as those related to public health;

Enable students to become familiar with the community that conducts clinical and epidemiological research in Portugal, as well as its experience and resources;

Show how epidemiology is used in different specialty areas and contexts, multidisciplinarity and research;

Provide an experience of scientific autonomy, with support and guidance, in the various stages of the scientific process, such as project proposal and analysis, project execution and the dissemination of results.

Career prospects

The Master in Epidemiology enables the acquisition of fundamental skills for:

The support of clinical health and epidemiological research activities (e.g. in Research Services, Hospital Clinical and Public Health Epidemiology, Pharmaceutical Industry, Contract Research Organizations);

The epidemiological evaluation in health, including areas of epidemiological surveillance and public health;

The conduct of observational studies in clinical areas (prognosis, diagnosis) and evaluation of effectiveness of interventions, among others (of interest, for example, to Scientific Societies, Pharmaceutical Industry, Public Health Administration Entities, Consulting Companies and Contract Research Organizations)..;

The integration of epidemiological information in clinical decision making, in public health and in health economics (of interest, for example, to Scientific Societies, Pharmaceutical Industry, Entities of Public Administration in Health, Regulatory Entities in Health, Consulting Companies and Contract Research Organizations).

Thus, the course trains for clinical research and for careers in healthcare, public health, healthcare consulting, and research and development.

Access and ingress

Critérios de Admissão

Admitted candidates should hold a bachelor's degree (pre-Bologna or the 1st Cycle of Studies according to the Bologna Process) in Medicine and other related areas; related areas. These include, but are not restricted to, Nursing, Psychology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Senior Health Technicians (radiology, clinical analyses, etc.), Education Sciences, Biology, Nutrition, Veterinary Medicine, Geography, Social Sciences, Humanities and Mathematics. Candidates who apply for the course will be selected by the MSc Committee, taking into account the following criteria:
• Final grade from the Bachelor's or Integrated Master's degree
• Academic, scientific and professional CV
• Letter of application and statement of purpose
• The selection process will include an interview
