Molecular Biology and Genetics

Faculty of Sciences
Goals

The scientific education in Molecular Biology and Genetics provides students with knowledge that is required by employers in sectors that are under quick development in Portugal and in Europe. The potential employers include laboratories involved in environmental issues, public health, pharmaceutics, and forensic medicine. Students who finish this Master are also specially prepared for fundamental and applied research in the academic environment. The techniques of Molecular Biology most used nowadays were developed in the recent decades and are in continuous upgrade. Allied to computational resources, they are used on a routine basis in genetic laboratories to search, localize, and study the structure and function of genes. In microbiology laboratories, molecular biology and genetics play an unvaluable role to understand how pathogenic microbes evolve and how the immunitary system responds to their presence. Knowledge and experience in such rapidly evolving scientific areas are in growing demand all over the world.
