The Shanghai Ranking, the oldest and one of the most influential and respected higher education rankings, placed the University of Lisbon among the 300 best universities in the world.

In 2024, ULisboa rose in three indicators: number of articles published in Nature and Science scientific journals, number of publications indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index, and the university's per capita performance.
The Shanghai Ranking has been updated annually since its launch in 2003 and this year analysed more than 2,500 universities to select the 1,000 best for publication.
This ranking is based on six indicators: the number of alumni and professors awarded the Nobel Prize and Fields Medal, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in Nature and Science journals, the number of publications indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index, and the university's per capita performance.
Harvard University (USA) tops the ranking for the 22nd time in a row, followed by Stanford University (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), University of Cambridge (UK) and University of California, Berkeley (USA).
