Goals

This study cycle aims at giving the student the scientific knowledge, the technical skills and the supervision he needs in order to carry out a research work liable to be seen as an original and solid contribution in any field of Textual Criticism. The Programme aims at providing solid specialized expertise in textual criticism and promoting the student’s ability to develop autonomous research. The specific learning outcomes are: (i) to acquire knowledge in a stimulating research environment; (ii) to deepen the ability to bethink central aspects of the selected topic; (iii) to increase the skills for critical reasoning; (iv) to develop the ability to identify research problems, to formulate and test hypotheses, thus providing new results in the field; (v) to improve the quality of the research results dissemination. These skills consist of an in-depth knowledge of the methods and theoretical foundations of this field of studies

Career prospects

With a strong interdisciplinary profile, it fosters a close relationship with areas such as language sciences, literature, history, cultural studies and philosophy, enabling editorial work with texts from any period.

Critérios de Admissão

The PhD in Textual Criticism follows the University of Lisbon Postgradute Studies Regulation (art. 26 of Ordinance 2950/2015, DR nº 57 23 march 2015) and points a) b) and c) from art. 30 of the DL nº 63/2016, from 13 september. Students applying to the Programme have to match one of the three following conditions: a) hold an MA degree or equivalent; b) hold a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, as well as an academic or scientific curriculum considered by the Scientific Council as relevant for attending the Programme, thus attesting the student’s skills for this purpose; c) exceptionally, hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum considered by the Scientific Council as showing their ability to become a student at the PhD Programme, but no Bachelor’s degree. The selection process of the candidates will be made according to criteria of absolute merit. The acceptance of the application implies the definition, by the Scientific Committee, of an individual training plan.
